Online reaction to Rob Ford rant shows support for troubled mayor

After another video surfaced of an intoxicated Mayor Rob Ford, online reaction appeared to show support for the troubled politician.

“Sooooooo tired of Rob Ford news. Can’t you guys find something worth talking about?” Todd Hassard tweeted on Tuesday.

“The media needs to stop bugging Rob Ford! What he does on his free time is his business,” Robert McFadzen added.

However, newspaper editorials had harsh words for Ford on Wednesday morning.

Toronto Sun columnist Mike Strobel writes, “The thud of our mayor falling off the wagon … it’s a sad sound, or ought to be, regardless of your politics.”

The Toronto Star editorial starts with, “So much for turning over a new leaf” and goes on to call Ford “unfit” to be mayor.

The first line of the Globe and Mail column reads, “Why is Rob Ford still the Mayor of Toronto?”

Ford admitted that he was drinking on Monday but said it was on “my own time.” He had pledged to stop drinking in November, after he admitted to smoking crack cocaine.

The video of Ford called “New Video of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford Drunk, Swearing in Jamaican Patois? Bumbaclot,” was uploaded to YouTube by Toronto TheCity on Tuesday.

It was taken at a steakhouse called Steak Queen in Etobicoke on Monday. A second video showing Ford meeting with his friend and accused drug dealer, Alexander Lisi, was taken at the same restaurant on the same evening.

When the second video surfaced, a Twitter user named ‏@Mybi29 said “get a life.”

In the first video, Ford calls police chief Bill Blair a filthy name. That has led to some councillors suggesting Ford should recuse himself from Wednesday’s executive committee meeting, where the police service’s $1-billion budget is up for debate.

Toronto police told CityNews that chief Blair has seen the video but declined to comment about personal attacks.
