Expansion plans unveiled for BMO Field

Expansion plans have been unveiled for BMO Field, the current home of the Toronto FC.

The major makeover will see tens of thousands of seats added to a stadium, which currently holds some 20,000 spectators, and a roof added over part of the field.

The price tag for the expansion is not yet available.

The plans were unveiled at a public meeting at Exhibition Place on Wednesday night.

Coun. Mike Layton, who represents the Trinity-Spadina ward, addressed his concerns at the meeting.

“The number of people living around Exhibition Place has increased it exponentially with all the condos going up, and that brings with it a lot of things. It brings with it concerns about traffic, congestion, concerns about noise,” Coun. Layton told CityNews at the meeting.

The expansion could also mean a new home for the Toronto Argonauts, once the team’s lease runs out at Rogers Centre.

If the plan is allowed to proceed, the stadium would be large enough to host games during the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Winter Classic.
