1 dead, 1 injured in Hwy. 401 crash

A 22-year-old man has died and a woman is in hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries after a crash on Highway 401 at Bayview Avenue.

The three-vehicle collision happened just before 5 a.m. on Monday on the westbound collector lanes, west of Leslie Street.

A Mercedes Benz was travelling along the lanes when police say a taxi cab, which was involved in another collision with another vehicle, spun into its path.

“A BMW and a taxi cab collided with each other,” OPP Sgt. Dave Woodford said at the scene.

“The taxi cab spun out and then struck the Mercedes. The Mercedes lost control and then hit the cement barrier.”

The driver of the Mercedes “went into the cement barrier wall and as a result he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Fire crews had to cut the roof off the car to remove the two people trapped inside.

The westbound collector lanes of the 401 were closed west of Leslie to Bayview for the crash investigation, which made for a chaotic commute during the rush hour. The lanes have since reopened.
