Ajax woman, 19, critical after crash with suspected drunk driver

An Ajax teen was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after police say an impaired driver crashed into her car on Monday evening.

Durham regional police say the suspect was driving a Pontiac Montana van when she rear-ended a Fiat hatchback on Kingston Road near Lakeridge Road at about 11 p.m.

Both drivers had to be extracted when their cars ended up in the ditch.

The 19-year-old victim was first taken to a nearby hospital and later transferred  to a Toronto trauma center to be treated for her life-threatening injuries.

Joan Skelton, 56, of Ajax, was treated for minor injuries at the nearby hospital where she was arrested and later charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm and exceeding an alcohol-blood level of 80 milligrams.
