Fight erupts in Richmond Hill parking lot after 2 dogs left in hot car

A Richmond Hill parking lot was the site of a dramatic clash between shoppers concerned about two dogs left in a car — and the pets’ owners.

Around 12:30 p.m. on Friday, shoppers at the Loblaws near Bayview Avenue and Highway 7 spotted the dogs in a car and became concerned, with temperatures in the GTA hovering around 26 C.

A witness told CityNews he called police while another man went to find water for the dogs.

When the man and woman who apparently owned the dogs returned to their car, they got into a fight with a group of people in the parking lot.

As the couple was driving away, some in the group tried to block them, including a Loblaws employee whose foot was run over.

York Regional Police said the animals had been in the car for about 20 to 30 minutes but weren’t in distress.

The couple won’t be charged with animal cruelty and was allowed to leave with the dogs.

The pair was also forgiven for running over the employee’s foot. Police said the group acted unlawfully by trying to detain people who hadn’t committed a crime.
