Mayor John Tory enjoying 74% approval during first days in office: poll

The first opinion poll since Mayor John Tory took office earlier this month shows he is enjoying a honeymoon period with Torontonians.

The Forum Research poll of 1,001 randomly selected Toronto voters shows Tory has an overall approval rating of 74 per cent.

His approval rating has risen from 53 per cent in late November, a month after he had won the city’s top job, on a series of announcements and public appearances.

Four months after the election, Rob Ford began his mayoralty in 2010 with an approval rating of 60 per cent. It eventually fell as low as 28 per cent.

Forum Research President Lorne Bozinoff called the high rating a “novelty for Toronto.”

“This is most likely because they have had such a low bar set for their approval for the last four years,” Bozinoff said in a news release.

The poll shows Tory has support in every region of the city, with approval ratings above 70 per cent in every pre-amalgamation neighbourhood.

The poll was conducted by telephone interactive voice response on Dec. 17 and 18. The results are considered accurate within plus or minus three per cent, 19 times out of 20.
