Ghomeshi’s lawyer appears in court, says case ‘progressing’

The lawyer for former CBC radio host Jian Ghomeshi appeared in court on his behalf on Wednesday morning.

Danielle Robitaille said the case was “progressing” and that they had received 1,000 pages of disclosure so far from the Crown and are expecting more.

Ghomeshi, 47, faces seven counts of sexual assault and one of overcoming resistance by choking.

The former Q host was fired by the broadcaster in October and was first charged by police a month later.

During his last court appearance in January, Toronto police laid three new charges after three new complainants came forward.

Ghomeshi was freed on $100,000 bail, and one of his lawyers said he would be pleading not guilty.

At the time, CBC News reported that one of the complainants was a former CBC employee, but a spokesman declined to comment on the latest charges.

Only one of the six complainants — actress Lucy DeCoutere — can be identified publicly. The others are all subject to a standard publication ban, as is any evidence presented at the bail hearing.

If convicted, Ghomeshi faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

The case will be back in court on Feb. 26, when a date could be set for the preliminary hearing.

CORRECTION: A previous story said the preliminary hearing would begin on Feb. 26.
