Mayor Tory ‘concerned’ after another concrete piece falls from Gardiner

Toronto Transportation crews are investigating after what looks like another piece of concrete from Gardiner Express fell onto the road below on Tuesday morning.

In a tweet, police said it appears the concrete came from the eastbound Gardiner and northbound Don Valley ramp and landed on Lake Shore Boulevard just before 9 a.m.

“Information was received that apparently there had been huge chunks of concrete that had fallen onto the roadway,” Toronto police Const. Jeniffer Sidhu said.

Stibbe said the concrete hit the guardrail and split into a couple of pieces.

“They’ve collected that material. It is ranging in size from a softball up to one-and-a-half feet in length,” Const. Clint Stibbe told 680News.

Darrell Hennigar was driving in the middle lane when he saw the chunks come down, and told 680News he nearly hit the concrete.

“We’re talking a couple of basketball-sized chunks of concrete … bunch of softball chunks laying there along the side of the highway,” he said.

No injuries were reported.

Myles Currie, director of Toronto Transportation Services, told 680News crews are inspecting the area and conducting chipping to make sure it’s safe.

“A piece of [the] Gardiner wall did fall onto the Lake Shore shoulder, approximately 10 to five pieces in length of 15-30 centimetres,” Currie said.

In a statement, Tory said he was concerned about the “growing reports of fallen debris from the Gardiner” and has asked city staff to look into ways to make the expressway safer.

“Public safety must be paramount. To that effect, I have asked City staff to a look at additional measures, including possible methods of containing or reinforcing vulnerable parts of the Gardiner, to make it safer.

Tory said staff will provide an update to him in the coming weeks.
