Some guards to be armed at Queen’s Park

Security is being permanently stepped up at the Ontario legislature, including the arming of some guards.

The deadly shooting on Parliament Hill in October led to a task force review of security protocols at Queen’s Park.

Legislative Speaker Dave Levac said there will be “minor arming” of some guards but he won’t provide specifics.

“I’m not going to send a flier out and publicly announce who’s got what and what’s going to happen,” he explained. “We continually review circumstances at the legislature and there will be some evidence of some changes slowly integrated so that it’s less intrusive.”

As for the possibility of metal detectors for all visitors, Levac said the potential for screening is going to be implemented.

Currently, only people who want to go into the public galleries of the legislative chamber have to go through a metal detector.
