Subway service resumes on Line 1 from Bloor to Union stations

Subway service has resumed on Line 1 (Yonge-University-Spadina) after a substance leaked at track level in College Station on Monday night.
Service was suspended around 11:30 p.m. on Monday and resumed around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Toronto Fire said in a tweet that a test on the leak showed a “small amount of hydrocarbon brought in from groundwater” and that there is “no explosion hazard.”
City of Toronto, TTC, and Toronto Fire crews were on the scene trying to identify the spilled substance and the source of the leak.
TTC CEO Andy Byford said there was a strong smell of diesel in the station.
TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said the liquid leaked through the expansion joints within the subway tunnel.
“My heart sank,” Byford said earlier this morning upon hearing of the subway service issue.
At the time, Byford said he suspected gasoline was seeping into the tunnel and that the TTC suspended service due to safety concerns.
“Where is it coming from, what is it exactly, because if it is a gasoline-type product, then we can’t operate the subway as safely because of sparks and vapours, and we’d have a disaster down there,” Ross said.
The TTC had 70 buses running between Rosedale and St. Andrew stations. Buses bypassed Union due to construction on Front Street.
