Toronto and Montreal mayors combine efforts to build cities

The mayors of Canada’s two largest cities had their first formal sit down on Wednesday.

John Tory welcomed Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre for an early-morning meeting at Toronto City Hall.

The two leaders discussed how the cities can work together.

“Team work will produce wins for us both, and for Canada”, Tory said at a news conference after the meeting.

Coderre is speaking at the Toronto Region Board of Trade over the lunch hour.

In a speech entitled “Montreal, The Other Canadian Metropolis,” Coderre will discuss his mission to clean up Montreal’s corruption and build up the city with the help of the provincial government and partnerships with other municipalities.

Coderre’s relationship with Toronto’s last mayor was rocky.

At last year’s Big City Mayors Caucus in Ottawa, he said he refused to shake Rob Ford’s hand, adding the meeting was a “caucus, not a circus.”
