Officials to study safety of CityPlace intersection

A dangerous intersection has some residents of an up-and-coming neighbourhood concerned about their safety.

The sprawling intersection of Dan Leckie Way and Fort York Boulevard in CityPlace currently has a four-way stop and handles traffic from Spadina Avenue, Bathurst Street and Lake Shore Boulevard.

In recent months there have been multiple cases of pedestrians being struck at the intersection. Last week a mother and her baby managed to escape serious injury when they were hit by a vehicle. As well, in January a man in a wheelchair was struck by a car while trying to cross the street.

“It’s a dangerous intersection. I think most people know that around here,” area resident Hayley Jensen explained. “It’s especially dangerous at night. Cars just don’t seem to see people.”

Many residents believe something has to be done immediately before another collision happens. In response to the neighbourhood complains, city officials said they are about to begin a road safety study.

“I share many of the same concerns of families in the area,” Coun. Joe Cressy said. “We’ve reached out to transportation services to get a full briefing on the range of options available to us, whether it is to do with lights or whether it’s to do with a crosswalk.”

The neighbourhood, which began to take shape in 2002, is now home to 7,500 condo units.

“This is an area (where) 20 years ago we didn’t have anybody living,” Cressy said. “Twenty years later and we have 7,500 units and so we have to ensure that we’re building neighbourhoods, not just building towers and that means safe streets.”

Cressy has also requested a study be done at Spadina and Fort York to look at re-timing the traffic lights.

Both studies should be complete in the next three months.
