Police warn residents after rash of break-ins at Toronto highrise

Toronto police are warning residents at a Toronto apartment complex near Yonge and Eglinton to remain vigilant after a string of break-ins over the last few months.

Police say there have been 11 break-ins at the complex at 140 Erskine Avenue since March, with two taking place over the holiday weekend.

Resident Brad Loucks says his neighbour was one of the unlucky ones.

“They ransacked the entire apartment,” he said.

“I just hope they catch the guy because it’s a personal violation when somebody breaks into your place. Do you ever feel safe again?”

Police at 53 Division posted a notice at the building, which included a possible suspect description. The suspected culprit is a white man, 45 to 50 years old. He’s six-foot-one, 185 pounds, with shoulder length black hair.

The suspect breaks in during the day when residents aren’t home. Police believe he pries the front door open with a crowbar.

Investigators aren’t sure how he gets into the building.

“At this point we are not exactly sure if it’s someone who followed someone in, if they have a key, or if they actually live in the building,” said Const. Victor Kwong.

Police say they will hold an information session for residents.

Building management declined to comment.
