Demonstrators march on Queen’s Park for changes to environmental policies

A demonstration planned for Queen’s Park has drawn international celebrity backing as protesters call change to environmental policies.

The Mass Rally for Jobs, Justice and Climate Action will coincide with the Pan Am Games and the Pan American climate and economic summits.

Protestors want to increase the use of clean energy and say positive environmental policies don’t need to hurt the economy.

Activist and actress Jane Fonda, who will take part in the demonstration, said the timing is not coincidental.

“A lot of policy makers and economists are here from all over the Americas and we want to get their ear that it’s time to stop climate change,” she explained.

“There’s catastrophes happening all over, whether it’s fires, floods, storms, cyclones, hurricanes, droughts all over the world,” said Fonda. “Massive things happening that are throwing our lives off kilter and it’s only going to get worse – catastrophically worse – unless we stabilize climate change.”

Fonda believes there’s still time to fix our environmental worries.

“Yes I am hopeful. I have grand-kids. I don’t want to not be hopeful. I want my grand-kids to be proud that grandma did everything she could while there was still time,” she said.

Fonda spoke with KiSS 92.5’s Maurie Sherman on Sunday about why she was participating in the rally:

Protestors are also calling for justice for First Nations, the poor and the working class.

Environmental activist David Suzuki and Canadian musician Joel Plaskett will take part in the demonstration.

Suzuki also spoke with Maurie Sherman on Sunday:

The demonstration gets underway at 1 p.m.
