Twiga the giraffe, 25, dies at Toronto Zoo

A Toronto Zoo giraffe has died after weeks of failing health.

The zoo said that Twiga collapsed in the outdoor area of the habitat on Saturday and was euthanized by the zoo veterinarians. A necropsy will be conducted by the University of Guelph.

Twiga just recently celebrated her 25th birthday and was one of the oldest Masai giraffes in North America.

She produced nine offspring while at the zoo, including her two-year-old female calf, Mstari, that was born in Oct. 2013.

“Twiga lived a very long life and provided staff, volunteers, members and visitors with many memorable moments over the years,” said the Toronto Zoo in a Facebook post. “Keepers remember her as being an incredible mother and great leader to the younger giraffes over the years.”

Giraffes typically live to be about 25 years old in the wild and can live longer in captivity.

Mstari is very independent on her own and was weaned from Twiga.

“She will be thoroughly missed by everyone,” said the Toronto Zoo.
