Former Blue Jay Jose Reyes pleads not guilty to domestic abuse

Former Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Jose Reyes has pleaded not guilty to charges of abuse against a family member, according to TMZ.

Reyes was arrested on Oct. 31 for allegedly grabbing his wife by the throat at the Four Seasons Hotel in Maui, Hawaii.

According to a 911 recording of the incident, hotel security said Reyes and his wife got into an argument, and as a result “she has some injuries to her left leg and some scratches to her neck.”

According to TMZ, Reyes was released on $1,000 bail and barred from having contact with his wife for three days. Reyes was not in the courtroom to enter the plea. He’s due back in court in January.

Reyes played three seasons for the Blue Jays after being acquired from the Miami Marlins in a blockbuster deal in November 2012. Reyes was traded to the Colorado Rockies last summer, along with Jeff Hoffman and Miguel Castro for Troy Tulowitzki and LaTroy Hawkins.

Reyes is a four-time all-star and was the National League batting champion in 2011.

Major League Baseball has launched its own internal investigation on the incident, which is ongoing.
