Calgary man arrested in 2012 Toronto murder

By News staff

Toronto police have arrested a Calgary man in the death of Mike Pimentel, killed on New Year’s Day in 2012.

Shawn Poirier, 30, was arrested in Calgary last week and transported to Toronto on Wednesday, police said at a news conference Thursday.

He has been charged with second-degree murder.

Pimentel, 24, was separated from friends after leaving the Liberty Grand banquet hall at Exhibition Place and was found stabbed near Liberty Street and Hanna Avenue just before 3 a.m. He died in hospital.

In 2014, police launched a social media campaign inspired by the American true-crime podcast Serial.

They posted photos and clues of people and evidence, hoping that would prompt witnesses to come forward.

On Dec. 31, 2014, the police tweeted out the last clue, a photo of a man they classified as a “person of interest.”
