Committee will begin to consider 2016 Toronto budget

By News staff

Torontonians will find out Tuesday if city staff complied with the mayor’s request to keep property taxes in line with inflation.

The budget committee will get its first look at the city’s preliminary 2016 budget when it is released later this morning.

In a letter to budget chief Gary Crawford, John Tory said he wants council to keep property taxes in line with inflation, which is currently at around 1.3 per cent.

At the same time, Tory is calling for increased city spending on transit, poverty reduction and paramedics.

The mayor also wants a spending freeze on things like travel, seminars and business meetings – essentially items that are discretionary in nature.

Council will vote on the final budget in February.
