Former elementary teacher arrested in child pornography investigation

A former Toronto elementary school teacher and private tutor has been arrested in connection to a child pornography investigation on Wednesday, said police.

On Nov. 6, a man was viewing child pornography on a public computer at the Employment and Social Services Centre located at Lawrence Square around 11:30 a.m

Police said that the man was allegedly in possession of images of child pornography and was viewing them on a public computer.

Stephen Jospeh Schacter, 55, of Toronto was arrested and is now charged with possession of child pornography.

According to police, Schacter was an elementary school teacher for Eitz Chaim schools between 1986 and 2004. There are three Eitz Chaim schools located in North York.

Police said he was also the office administrator at the United Synagogue Day School, located in York, between 2005 and 2009. It is also alleged that he then worked as a private tutor from 2009 to 2011.

Police executed a search warrant in North York on Dec. 16. and have concern that Schacter may have had inappropriate contact with students in the past based on the evidence seized.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact them.
