Ghomeshi witness under stiff cross-examination as lawyer probes discrepancies

TORONTO – The first witness at the Jian Ghomeshi sex assault trial is facing intensifying cross-examination.

She denies suggestions from Ghomeshi’s lawyer she was unhappy that he appeared to have lost interest in her after an initial encounter where he had been highly flirtatious.

The lawyer, Marie Henein, also told court the former radio star never had a VW Beetle at the time of their first encounter during which the complainant says he became violent.

The woman, who cannot be identified, had earlier said one of the things that charmed her about Ghomeshi was the yellow “love bug” he drove.

The lawyer made much of the fact that the witness talked to several media outlets about her experiences in 2014 before going to police.

Police charged Ghomeshi after she said he had yanked her hair hard on one occasion in late 2002 in his car and then, about a month later, had pulled her hair and punched her head at his home.
