Art installation to pay homage to history of new Toronto courthouse site

By News Staff

Recent archaeological discoveries on the site of the new Toronto courthouse have inspired Infrastructure Ontario to install artwork on the site’s construction fencing on Centre Street, just steps away from the existing courthouse at 333 University Avenue.

The artwork will go up in May and will help commemorate the downtown site’s rich cultural history.

The site, which was most recently a public parking lot, underwent a complex archaeological excavation that uncovered numerous artifacts, mainly from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The 1.7 acre site was once part of St. John’s Ward, one of the city’s first immigrant settlements and migrant communities. It was home to refugee slaves who escaped to Canada via the underground railroad in the mid-19th century.

Once completed, the new Toronto courthouse will bring together several courts across the city in one location.
