A Chicago comedian found out the hard way that cab drivers in Toronto are in no mood to hear about Uber.
Hannibal Buress was appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers when he brought up his recent trip to Toronto for the NBA All-Star Weekend.
“It was hellishly cold on Saturday,” recounted Buress. “Me and my cousin get into a taxi – my house that I’m staying in is a few blocks away – and the taxi driver says, ‘It’s a $20 flat rate’.”
Buress said instead of taking the flat rate, he asked the driver to put the meter on.
The comedian claims he was then offered a free ride by the cabbie, which he turned down because he didn’t like the driver’s “condescending manner”.
That’s when the U-word came up.
“That’s why Uber is crushing you guys,” said Buress. At which point, he says, cabbie snapped and demanded he get out of the taxi.
