Overnight snow storm blasts through the GTA

By News Staff

Much of southern Ontario, including the GTA, continues to dig out from a snow storm that blasted through the region overnight.

According to Environment Canada, many areas in the GTA received between 14-17 centimetres of snow by Wednesday morning. Toronto proper had 12-18 centimetres, while Pearson International Airport recorded nine centimetres.

Much of the snowfall landed in Barrie South, Wiarton and Orillia – areas that received 30-31 centimetres of snow.

Due to the storm, school buses were cancelled in Toronto, Peel, York and Halton. Click here for updates.

Heavy and blowing snow made for dangerous and tricky driving during the height of the storm on Tuesday night and into the overnight hours. Fire trucks, transit buses and taxi cabs were spotted spinning out on the roads.

Although the snow plows were out in full force, driving conditions were slick during the Wednesday morning commute. Drivers and transit users were also advised to leave early.

GO Transit is also on a special schedule. Check here for updates.

Environment Canada’s winter storm warning has since ended for Toronto and the GTA, but a special weather statement is in effect for Barrie, Owen Sound and Collingwood.

Taylor said snow in the GTA will end early Wednesday morning, but it will be windy and there’s still a chance of flurries for the rest of the day. It will be a cold night with a low of -16 C and a wind chill near -25.

Toronto’s crews are still clearing roadways and plowing will continue through the morning and afternoon. To view where city crews have plowed, check out the PlowTO website.

The weather also impacted air travel in and out of the GTA. At one point, close to 250 flights were cancelled at Pearson airport. For anyone headed to Billy Bishop Airport, a travel advisory is in effect. Before going to either airport, travellers should check on the status of their flight.
