A woman who allegedly stabbed a man early Thursday morning in Rosedale appeared in court Friday to face charges that include attempted murder.

Emergency crews were called to Rosedale Valley Road, near Yonge and Bloor streets, around 7:30 a.m. A 67-year-old man had been stabbed multiple times with a large kitchen knife, Toronto police say. He was rushed to hospital, where he remains with life-threatening injuries.

The search for the suspect lasted several hours and included a suicide attempt, police say.

The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle and ended up at a high-rise building near Church and Charles streets. After a number of hours, police managed to rescue the woman from the building and take her into custody.

Ellis Kirkland, 60, of Toronto, is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, and weapons dangerous to the public peace.

Kirkland is a well-known executive, consultant and lobbyist. The relationship between the accused and the victim has not been revealed, and there’s no word on a possible motive.

On Friday, a publication ban was ordered on the name of the victim and evidence heard at the bail hearing.
