Father’s Day is upon us and Google is helping to shine a light on the millions of kids whose fathers are in prison today in America.

Google collaborated with non-for-profit organizations including Pops the Club and Place4Grace to create “Love Letters,” a national campaign designed to give children of incarcerated parents a voice to share their experiences.

“When you come home, Dad, I want…” said 9-year-old Maya, before burying her face and oncoming tears in her hands.

According to recent statistics, Maya is one of 2.7 million children in the United States who have at least one incarcerated parent this Father’s Day.

Mass incarceration is a serious issue in the United States, as a country that represents only 5 per cent of the world’s population but over 20 per cent of the world’s prison population.

The touching video unveils the many health conditions that children who grow up separated from their fathers are vulnerable to, and also urges viewers to support organization who bring awareness to the devastating “human cost of mass incarceration” in the United States.

Child advocacy organization FEAT (For Children of Incarcerated Parents) reports there are currently more than 20,000 children in the Greater Toronto Area with an incarcerated parent and over 350,000 children nation-wide.
