Man accused of trying to steal car says he was warming it up for test drive

By The Canadian Press

BARRIE, Ont. – Police in Barrie, Ont., say a man accused of trying to steal a car told officers he was just trying to warm it up for a test drive.

Officers investigating a report of suspicious activity at a car dealership early Wednesday found a man sitting in a Ford Mustang with the brake and headlights flashing on and off.

They say the man was attempting to start the car with the push-start button, but didn’t have the key fob that would have started the vehicle.

While being arrested, police say the man told them he was going to warm up the car before his test drive with the manager in the morning.

Investigators say he was about five hours early for the test drive and the manager was not aware of the appointment.

A 35-year-old man is charged with attempted theft of a motor vehicle and failing to comply with a probation order.
