Toronto utility bills, including water and garbage fees, going up in 2017

By News Staff

Toronto residents will pay more for running water and for garbage pickup in 2017.

City council voted Thursday to increase water and wastewater charges by five per cent, or $46 for the calendar year. That means the average bill will go up from $914 to $960. Another five-per-cent jump is expected for 2018 as well.

General waste collection will go up two per cent. The proposed hike was 5.2 per cent. There’s also a new $8 annual surcharge for the removal of metal and oversized items. That applies to all residents, even if they don’t use the service.

Council voted against a $25 fee to downsize the existing garbage bins.

The increased fees are expected to bring in about $4.8 million to the city’s budget.
