CityNews expanding to 5 cities across Canada

By News Staff

Beginning this fall, CityNews will further expand the boundaries of its tagline “everywhere.”

Rogers Media will expand the award-winning news show CityNews across the country. Local versions of the program, produced locally, will air daily on City TV in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Montreal.

The one-hour newscasts CityNews at Six and CityNews Tonight will be broadcast seven days a week at 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. (local time). The show makes it’s debut in Edmonton and Winnipeg on Sept. 4, and will expand into other markets in winter 2018.

“CityNews’s fresh and innovative approach to news reporting resonates strongly with younger viewers, with CityNews at Six – which we revitalized over the last 18 months – now ranking No. 1 in Toronto among the coveted 18-to-34 adult demo,” said Dave Budge, vice president of television news and information.

“We’re excited to bring the same authentic local approach to new audiences.”

In a statement, Rogers Media said it was committed to serving even more Canadians. During the local broadcasts, and as is already in place in Toronto and the GTA, complementary stories from Rogers Media’s sister brands such as Maclean’sBreakfast Television, and Sportsnet will be featured on local broadcasts in each city. Each CityNews team will also engage with audiences through local websites and social media platforms.

“Staying true to the hard-hitting journalism that CityNews is known for, the content will focus on viewer-driven, original stories introduced by local reporters,” added Budge.

More details regarding programming and on-air news talent will be announced in the coming months.
