Police say one of the snakes found at a plaza in Newmarket on Monday has died.
The other snake is in “rough shape” but is being cared for at the Indian River Reptile Zoo.
York regional police and the Ontario SPCA were called to 17817 Leslie St., near Elgin Street, before 11 a.m.
They found two pythons in two plastic storage bins.
One snake is estimated to be six-to-eight feet long, and the other is “a little bit smaller,” said York Regional Police Constable Andy Pattenden.
There is a reptile store in the plaza, and police believe someone may have abandoned the snakes, hoping the store would take them. However, the store cannot take abandoned snakes.
