Smoking in bed likely cause of Finch and Kipling fire

By News Staff

Three people are in hospital after a fire in an apartment, and that fire was likely caused by a woman smoking in bed.

The fire began around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday in a unit on Stevenson Road, near Finch and Kipling avenues.

There were oxygen tanks in the unit, a Toronto Fire spokesperson said, but they were not a factor in the fire. However, because the tanks were there, crews had to monitor them closely.

One woman suffered burns to her arms and two other people had smoke inhalation.

A Toronto Fire spokesperson told CityNews that the sheets and blankets on the bed caught fire, causing the woman’s injuries.

The cost of the damage is not yet known.
