Fire crews make quick work of school on fire in Etobicoke

By News Staff

A fire at Michael Power/St. Joseph High School in the Renforth Drive and Rathburn Road area of Etobicoke was quickly brought under control on Friday morning.

Toronto Fire Capt. David Eckerman said the school’s location definitely helped in this instance.

“I wouldn’t consider it very serious due to the fact that (the) high school is directly across from our Station 444,” he explained.

“We got the call at 11:33, went to one alarm at 11:34 and we were able to apply water at 11:37.”

Despite the quick work by fire crews, the school was damaged in the fire.

Eckerman said windows were blown out on one side of the building, resulting in heavy smoke seeping into the school.

The building was evacuated and there are no reports of injuries.

Crews remain on scene to douse hot spots.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
