Man seriously injured in crash on rail overpass in Vaughan

A man suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries after crashing into the guardrail of a railway overpass in Vaughan.

York regional police an officer on general patrol came across the single-vehicle crash on Keele Street just north of Steeles Avenue around 6 a.m. on Wednesday.

The driver was trapped in the vehicle for some time before emergency personnel extricated him.

The impact of the crash ripped the engine block from the car. The bridge railing suffered extensive damage and a part of it fell onto the railway tracks below, temporarily affecting both CN and GO Train traffic.

A 24-year-old man from Toronto is now facing an impaired driving by drug charge as well as possession of marijuana.

Keele Street was closed for some time as crews worked to repair the bridge, which was severely damaged in the crash.
