SIU investigates after 2 injured in North York shooting, stabbing

The province’s special investigations unit is investigating after a suspect was shot following a stabbing in the Jane Street and Finch Avenue West area Thursday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the scene near Driftwood Avenue and Cobbler Crescent around 9:15 a.m.

Witnesses said a fight broke out between two men on the sidewalk, and one of the men began repeatedly beating the other one.

“I was freaking out myself. I was trying to shout to the guy that was battering this guy and tell him ‘hey stop it’ but everybody was screaming, everybody was running, everybody was trying to get the guy’s attention,” Chris, who lives in a building across the street the scene from the fight, told the media.

The victim, believed to be in his 60s, was stabbed multiple times during the altercation and suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries.

When police arrived on scene, witnesses said an officer called out to the suspect before opening fire.

The SIU confirmed that the 26-year-old suspect was shot.

“A police issued firearm was discharged. The man was struck. Two persons were rushed to hospital,” SIU spokesperson Jason Gennaro said.

Paramedics said the man, believed to be in his 20s, was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

According to the SIU, the suspect’s injuries are now considered non-life-threatening.

The SIU is called in to investigate reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
