OPP to target high-risk drivers during Thanksgiving weekend

By The Canadian Press

Heading into the Thanksgiving Day long weekend, provincial police say officers will be concentrating on the four main causes of motor vehicle deaths.

They say distracted driving, speeding, impaired driving and failure to wear a seatbelt have contributed to 182 of the 239 road deaths investigated by the OPP this year.

Speeding and distracted driving lead of the four road death categories with distracted driving a factor in 63 deaths, while speeding contributed to 56 deaths as of Oct. 1.

Road deaths associated with impaired driving, distracted driving and speeding are down this year, but police say the number of people driving without a seatbelt is up.
