Man, 21, charged in fatal Newmarket shooting

A 21-year-old man has been charged in connection with a fatal shooting in Newmarket on Saturday night.

Police say they were called to the Sheldon Avenue area shortly before 10 p.m., where they found one victim suffering from gunshot wounds.

Cody Gionet, 30, from Georgina was transported to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Police arrested two suspects at a home close to the shooting.

Travis Whitman, of Newmarket, has been charged with second-degree murder.

Police said the second person arrested has been charged with unrelated offences.

There has been no word on a possible connection between Whitman and Gionet or a motive for the shooting.

Police are asking any additional witnesses that may have seen or heard anything in the Sheldon Avenue area leading up to or following the shooting, to call the Homicide Unit at 1-866-876-5423 ext. 7865.

As well, investigators are appealing to any nearby businesses or residences that may have video surveillance to please come forward.
