“My son had to sell his car:” Ajax bylaw rattles residents

A special street bylaw in Ajax has residents shelling out hundreds of dollars a year. “Oh a lot. I can’t even count it,” Ajax resident Ester Amakye said when she spoke with City News today.

Amakye has lived in a townhouse complex for the past five years, and she’s been slapped with ticket after ticket because of the special bylaw.

Amakye isn’t the only one affected. Many residents have been complaining to the town about this bylaw.

Mohamed Wasak has been billed upwards of five-hundred dollars a year because of the rule. His son had to sell his car because he couldn’t afford to pay the tickets anymore. The town’s bylaws forbid overnight parking between 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. — but it’s only strictly enforced between November and March.

“That’s the time that we need to keep roads open to ensure our big 5-tonne plows can get through and do plowing and salting activities” says Derek Hannan with the Town of Ajax bylaw services.

One resident told CityNews he spends close to five-hundred dollars a year on parking. He’s been asking the town for five years to set up a permit system, but says he didn’t get an answer.

The town says it now has something in the works. It expects to launch a pilot at the end of 2018 that will allow
residents or their guests to obtain a 24-hour parking permit on residential streets.

Permits will not be valid during active snow events, which would include the day(s) before, during and after a major snow event, when plowing and salting are taking place
