Window blown out as shots fired at downtown taxicab

No injuries were reported after shots were fired at a taxi in the city’s downtown core early Friday morning.

According to police, a person flagged down a taxi in the Dundas and Sherbourne streets area just around 1:30 a.m.

Police said the passenger began having a conversation with someone walking down the street. Suddenly the window broke and the passenger told the driver to go.

“There was no altercation or any sort of dispute. The taxi cab driver that came forth was surprised by that happened,” Det.-Const. Shane Wilson explained.

“Once the car window had broken, the [passenger] yelled to the driver to go, to drive, to leave the area.”

Police said the driver sped away, still unsure what had just happened.

“The driver thought perhaps a stone had been thrown. In fact, later it was found that a bullet hole was located in the door,” Wilson said.

The taxi stopped at Yonge-Dundas Square and authorities were called.

No suspect description has been released.

Police are encouraging any witnesses to come forward.
