Woman dead after being hit by truck at Front and Church

A 23-year-old woman is dead after being hit by a truck downtown on Friday, paramedics confirm.

It happened around 12:30 p.m. at Front and Church streets.

Const. Clint Stibbe said the truck driver was turning right where the road changes to Wellington Street East, when the woman and a 26-year-old man with her were hit.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

“It’s a very confusing intersection, and if you’re not paying attention, drivers do go fairly quickly here,” said Zee Marks, who lives in the area.

“It just breaks my heart. I’m in shock.”

The coroner has been called in to investigate.

Earlier in the day, just before 7 a.m., a 49-year-old man was hit by a vehicle at Warden Avenue and Alden Road in Markham.

Shortly after 8 a.m., a woman in her 60s was hit by a vehicle while cycling at Warden Avenue and Bamburgh Circle, south of Steeles Avenue East in Scarborough.

That man and woman have life-threatening injuries.
