GTA plunges back into deep freeze

After a few days of comparatively warm weather, GTA residents are in for another round of bone-chilling temps.

Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for parts of the GTA, including Caledon, Newmarket, Uxbridge and northern York and Durham regions.

The agency said extreme wind chill values near minus-30 are expected overnight and early Sunday morning.

Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin.

The City of Toronto’s extreme cold weather alert is still in effect with wind chill values in the minus-20s forecast for Saturday.

But 680 NEWS meteorologist Harold Hosein says those living or travelling east of the city could be dealing with a lot worse.

“Watch out once you get east of Cobourg,” he said. “There’s still wind coming off Lake Ontario and there’s heavy snow in the Belleville to Kingston area.”

If you’re braving the cold, Toronto Public Health recommends dressing in layers and covering up any exposed skin. Regular breaks in heated buildings like libraries and malls is also a good idea if you need to be out and about.

Citizens are also urged to check on vulnerable family, friends and neighbours, especially those who live alone and isolated seniors.
