Toronto police say the 19-year-old mother of a newborn baby boy who was reportedly discovered naked and abandoned Tuesday morning will not be charged.

Police originally said the baby was found in a laneway behind a plaza near Keele Street and Lawrence Avenue just before 11 a.m. They said a passerby claimed to have put clothing on the boy and brought him to a safe indoor area before calling police.

Const. Jenifferjit Sidhu said that when police arrived, “the baby was conscious, breathing and murmuring,” although his health was in jeopardy.

The baby was rushed to a hospital, where he remained in critical condition as of Wednesday morning.

However, a police source later told 680 NEWS the story may have been fabricated. The police source said investigators are questioning the validity of the account, and they are trying to determine if the mother made the story up.

Police said the mother, who they later found, is receiving medical care.

Police do not yet know when or where the baby was born.
