Cousin claims Barry Sherman asked him to kill his wife: reports

By News Staff

Murdered billionaire Barry Sherman asked his cousin to kill his wife, according to media reports.

Sherman’s estranged cousin Kerry Winter told The Toronto Star and the Daily Mail that the Apotex founder twice asked him to kill his wife Honey in the 1990s.

Winter says he’ll be speaking to Toronto police as soon as Thursday.

Police spokesperson Mark Pugash would not comment on the reports, saying they “never discuss who we will interview or anything like that” during the course of an investigation.

Winter told the news outlets that he believes Barry killed Honey and then killed himself.

The Sherman family responded to the allegations on Thursday night, releasing the following statement:

“We are deeply hurt, shocked, and angered that Kerry Winter is using the tragedy of our parents’ homicides to make outrageous and baseless claims about our father. The family accepts the conclusion of the Toronto Police Service, and finds it regrettable that the media would give a platform to these completely absurd allegations.”

Winter was ordered to pay $300,000 in legal costs to the Shermans a week before they were found dead after a failed bid by Winter to sue his cousin for part of his fortune.

CityNews and 680 NEWS have not independently verified the claims made by Winter.

Barry and Honey Sherman were found dead in their North York mansion in December. Last week, Toronto police said they were treating the deaths as a double homicide.

“We believe we have sufficient evidence to describe this as a double homicide and that both were targeted,” Det.-Sgt. Susan Gomes said on Friday from police headquarters.

Gomes said both were found dead by a real estate agent on Dec. 15 in the lower level pool area of their North York mansion, hanging by belts from a poolside railing. Autopsies confirmed both died from ligature neck compression.

Their home was up for sale at the time and police say there were no signs of forced entry.

Police sources had initially told media that they were considering the possibility of a murder-suicide — a declaration that the Sherman family vehemently rejected and called irresponsible. The family hired their own private investigators who concluded last week that the Shermans were murdered.
