Mississauga residents near Credit River urged to evacuate homes due to flood risks

Residents of a Mississauga neighbourhood near the Credit River are being urged to evacuate their homes due to flooding risks.
“Residents in the area east of the Credit River in the vicinity of Old Derry Road and Second Line West are encouraged to evacuate their homes as a precaution,” the City said in a release.
“At this time, only Willow Lane has been closed. Willow Lane, Barberry Lane, Old Mill Lane, Pond Street and a portion of Historic Trail up to Upper River Court are in the recommended evacuation area.”
Several homes in the Old Derry Road and Creditview area of Meadowvale flooded on Tuesday night and officials think things could get worse because the creek has been blocked with debris from melting ice and snow, causing the water to swell over its banks.
Credit Valley Conservation has upgraded an earlier flood outlook to a flood warning for Mississauga.
“The City of Mississauga has experienced substantial rainfall over the last 24 hours and the weather forecast is predicting an additional 20 millimetres of rainfall before the end of day Wednesday,” the city said in a news release.
“Water levels will continue to rise in response to the rain and melting snow. Ice in the Credit River may begin to break up as water levels approach the top of the bank which will increase the potential for flooding due to ice jams.”
A flood outlook issued by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority on Sunday remains in effect.
Although the GTA received only 7.6 millimetres of rain on Tuesday, the ground is still frozen and the rain water is not being absorbed, resulting in flooding.
More rain is expected on Wednesday, but the warm temperatures will come to an end. A record high of 14 C was reached at Pearson International Airport at 1 a.m., breaking a record of 12.9 C set in 1997. The temperature will fall to near 2 C late in the afternoon.
Outside of the GTA, officials in Brantford declared a state of emergency and a portion of the city was placed under an immediate evacuation due to flooding.
