Hwy. 401 collisions cause major damage, diesel spill

The OPP is investigating a pair of collisions involving two transport trucks on Highway 401 on Saturday morning.

The first happened just before 7 a.m. in the transfer lanes from the express to the collectors near Avenue Road.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said a tractor-trailer slammed into a concrete barrier, destroying both the vehicle and the wall and spilling diesel onto the road.

“One of the transport trucks struck debris, then plowed into the concrete wall here, which needs to be repaired,” he said. “The cleanup crews are here right now. The diesel, again, across all the lanes.”

That crash scattered debris across the highway, which caused a second collision involving several cars and causing major damage to another transport truck.

No one was seriously hurt, and Schmidt said there’s no word on charges.

The Ministry of the Environment has been called in.
