Enhanced security screening for ferry passengers at Billy Bishop Airport

Billy Bishop Airport has started its enhanced security screening measures for those boarding the passenger ferry.

The enhanced screening went into effect on Monday.

Airport officials say as part of security regulations put in place by Transport Canada — under the Domestic Ferry Security Regulations — there will be random bag checks, looking for explosives.

Passengers are being told they may be approached by airport security to take part in the random screening prior to boarding the ferry.

But the ferry is not the only way to get to Billy Bishop. Passengers can also use the pedestrian tunnel, which connects the airport to the mainland at the foot of Bathurst Street.

It is not yet known if the security screenings will involve people who access the airport from the pedestrian walkway.
