Photos released of alleged gunman, getaway car after Etobicoke shooting

Toronto police have released photos of a man and car believed to be connected to a fatal shooting in Rexdale on Saturday evening.

Dwayne Anthony Vidal, 31, died after he was shot in the townhouse complex where he lived, on Mount Olive Drive, near Kipling and Finch avenues.

Police said Vidal had returned home around 5:30 p.m., and parked his car in a lot near his home.

As Vidal was walking to his townhouse, it’s alleged a man approached from the opposite direction and, as he was passing, shot Vidal a number of times in the back.

The man then ran north on Silverstone Drive and got into a passenger seat of a white car that was parked nearby.

Police received several 911 calls about the shooting and when they found Vidal, he was in critical condition. Paramedics took him to a trauma centre, where he died.

An autopsy on Sunday revealed the cause of death was gunshot wounds to the back.

Det.-Sgt. Mike Carbone said police reviewed several hours of surveillance video and noticed the man, who was wearing black clothes, had showed up at the townhouse complex several minutes before Vidal arrived. He was seen walking around before the shooting.

The suspect is black, between five feet nine inches and six feet tall. He was wearing a black hoodie and had his face covered.

“I know there are several shootings in that neighbourhood,” he said. “I can assure the public our organization is doing everything possible to keep them safe.”

Carbone also said Vidal, a father of three, had no criminal record and was not known to police.

“It’s safe to say it’s a tragic loss for [his family,]” he said. “They’re devastated.”

Carbone said he didn’t want to provide any further details that could taint witness accounts or deter people from supplying their own information.
