Police investigating leaked photo of Osuna in holding cell after arrest

By News Staff

Toronto police say its professional standards unit is investigating how a photo of Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Roberto Osuna in his holding cell was leaked to a local news station.

Osuna, 23, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with assaulting a woman.

The photo, which shows Osuna stretched out on a cot in his holding cell, was published on Globalnews.ca.

In a radio interview Wednesday afternoon vice-president of news content for Global News and Corus Radio, Ron Waksman, defended the use of the photo. He justified the decision, saying there’s intense public interest surrounding the arrest, adding that it’s important for the public to see that high-profile athletes aren’t given preferential treatment.

Major League Baseball (MLB) has placed the star relief pitcher on administrative leave. The Blue Jays said it fully supported MLB’s decision and that the team was taking the matter “extremely seriously.”

Osuna, who is in his fourth season with the team, is scheduled to appear in court in Toronto on June 18.

Ontario’s privacy commissioner is also investigating the leak of the photo.
