Alleged bike thief in hospital after fight near Dundas and Bathurst

An alleged bike thief is in hospital with serious injuries after an altercation near Kensington Market.

Emergency crews were called to the scene on Dundas Street West, just east of Bathurst Street, around 2:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Police said it appears a man was attempted to steal a bicycle when he was confronted by the bike’s owner and a fight broke out.

The suspect allegedly pulled out a knife but the bike’s owner fought him off, with the help of a knife sharpener he had brought out from the restaurant where he worked.

Police said the suspect suffered serious injuries in the fight. The bike’s owner sustained only minor wounds.

The suspect is in police custody and is facing multiple charges.

Dundas Street West was closed for several hours in the area while police investigated. The area has since reopened.
