Toronto police officer not to blame for DVP collision: SIU

By News Staff

The SIU has found a Toronto police officer not criminally responsible for a collision that left a man seriously injured last year.

A 45-year-old man was hospitalized on Oct. 5, 2017, after his motorcycle collided with two other vehicles in the southbound lanes of the Don Valley Parkway.

According to the SIU’s report, the officer in question used his cruiser’s air horn and emergency lights to get the motorcyclist’s attention to speak to him about his driving.

Instead of the stopping, the motorcyclist allegedly took the exit ramp at York Mills Road and struck the back of a stopped van, partly going through the vehicle’s rear window. He was charged with dangerous driving and sent to hospital with a fractured pelvis, chipped teeth and abrasions.

In his review, SIU director Tony Loparco said there’s no basis for laying criminal charges in this case.

“In reviewing the evidence in its entirety, it is clear that not only did the subject officer respond to the situation in full compliance with the Criminal Code, the Highway Traffic Act, the TPS Suspect Apprehension Pursuit policy and the Ontario Police Service Act, but he behaved at all times professionally, prudently and with good common sense,” Loparco said.
