Andy Warhol’s Wig Sells For $10,800

One of Pop artist Andy Warhol’s signature silver wigs sold at auction Thursday for $10,800. The item even still had three strips of toupee tape inside.

The art icon wore the wig sold Thursday in the 1980s, but he actually began wearing hairpieces in the early 60s to cover up his baldness.

The item fetched far more than the presale estimates of $4,000 to $6,000.

The wig was just one of a number of interesting items put on the auction block at Christie’s by Jeffrey Warhola, the artist’s nephew.

A Warhol Polaroid of Muhammad Ali, taken in 1977 and signed by the artist sold for $19,200. A Warhol Polaroid of Mick Jagger taken in 1975 went for $15,600.

Some other items up for sale belonged to Marilyn Monroe, including a black cocktail dress she wore while filming “The Misfits”, which sold for $66,000.

One of her coats sold for more than 50-grand and an address and telephone book that belonged to the voluptuous star fetched $31,200.

Monroe’s assistant penned many of the entries, but there were some notes made by the actress for her famous friends like Dean Martin, Sam Goldwyn Jr. and Susan Strasberg.

A bracelet given to “Gone with the Wind” star Clark Gable sold for $7,800 and a copy of the book with a note to Gable from the film’s producer went for just over $10,000.
