June 22 – StreetBeat: Wet Guns & Funny Money

Watered Down Guns

Toronto Police Marine Unit officers were called to the lakefront Friday after a witness reported seeing some guns floating in the water.  As it turns out, the concern was real, but the guns weren’t. They turned out to be replicas. But that doesn’t mean they still didn’t pose a danger. Cops say since it’s possible they may have been used in a crime, they’ll investigate their origins. The Guns and Gangs Task Force has been notified and the fake firearms will be examined for evidence that may link them to their owner.

Money For Nothing

From the outside, it looked like a normal factory turning out a product. Only on the inside the R.C.M.P. claims that product was funny money. The Mounties have arrested six men working out of a building on Wildcat Road in the Keele and Steeles Ave. area of North York, not far from York University.

They allege the suspects were running a printing press inside, turning out at least $400,000 in counterfeit bills, including good replicas of $20s, $50s and $100 notes. They also seized equipment they say was used to make bogus counterfeit credit, debit and social insurance cards and even fake drivers’ licenses.

Search warrants were also served at six residences in Markham and Thornhill. The men face 27 counts of conspiracy to counterfeit currency and possession of proceeds of crime. All the accused appeared in a Newmarket court on Friday.
